Leaving Darwin this morning heading to
Kakadu, I was glad to get out of that caravan park, as that’s where I got the
midges bites that have covered my legs and now it looks like I have had chicken
pox. Heading off early, as we want to do a cruise on the ‘Jumping Crocodiles’
on the way to Kakadu. Next cruise is at 11am, so we head for that one. We
arrived with plenty of time to spare, not a bad price for a family, $115. This
seemed to be run by all women as 2 women took us out on the boat. The boat was 2
stories and we headed to the upper deck. Off we go, these women, knew the
Adelaide River so well and they have names for all the crocodiles. We spot the
first crocodile, swimming towards the boat, the lady feeding them is up on the
top deck, and her name is Wendy. Wendy dangles down the piece of a pig’s head,
the crocodile swims quickly towards it, Wendy doesn’t let him get it, and she
makes him jump for it. OMG!!!! OMG!!! Its jumped up and grabbed it 1st
go. Well done ‘Archie’, the name of that croc. Moving on slowly, wow here’s another one a female, she jumps
and after her 3rd go grabs it. They only let them jump 3 times and
then let them have the food. Only fair I guess. Next was a huge one coming our
way, the ladies on the boat said it was ‘Bogart’, he was the boss of that
stretch of the Adelaide River. He was the biggest of them all, 5.5 metres long,
they give him 2 pieces of the meat and he gets the 1st straight
away, 2nd one with an almighty jump, oh wow!! I was taking photos,
Mark was too and the boys were clicking away on their ipods. I asked Wendy,”How
old would Bogart “be”, she said around 60 years. Another crocodile was Michael
Jackson as he had a white face and a brown body; he was shy and took awhile
before coming forward. He jumped for us grabbing his feed. Dylan got a great
shot with his mouth wide open. We learnt that some of the crocs do turn on each
other and that some of them might be missing a leg and the next one we saw was
missing the snout and his 2 teeth stuck out, it actually looked really funny.
We highly recommended this cruise and well worth the money, we came across Sea
Eagles, that were attempting the crocs food too and then Wendy fed them along
with the birds called ‘Kites’. Another great photo opportunity was had. We had
lunch when we returned and then headed towards Kakudu and we were staying at
the Gagudju Dreaming Lodge. It was around a 2.5 hour trip to our destination.
We stopped off in the Kakudu National Park and bought our tickets, $25 each.
Kids free. You must pay a fee when entering the National Park and to carry your
pass at all times. Arrived at around 3.30pm and its sooooo hot, all we want to
do is swim. Okay we can quickly do this unpacking and the kids can start to get
ready for the pool. Did the basic unpack and left Mark to do the rest while I
took the kids up to the pool. Wow, this is the best pool we have seen yet. A
glorious back drop of a waterfall and small pools around the large pool all
connecting each other. Spoke to Georgia while I was beside the pool and said” I
have to go I’m so hot, I need to get into the pool. (While she’s in Frankston
Freezing, I here)
What a relief to get into something so refreshing, we were all in
straight away.
Mark came up and cooled himself off too. A
late dinner by the time we left the pool area.
An added bonus about this place we are
staying is the customer service we received when driving to our site was just
the best ever. This manager came over introduced himself , and shook hands and
said I’ll walk you to your site. He suggested we move up one as someone else
was on the one we were moving in one. Great Service, Barry.
